The Week February 25th – March 03rd

WE WISH A HAPPY BIRTHDAY — to Gary McCary, Margaret Sheppard, Diane Ackley, Richard Bates, Raymond Bitar Sr.. Shevanthe Johnson, Joshua Ngo, Sara Abernathy, Vicky Calman and Kathleen Nordland.

Today’s Worship Speaker Our sermon today will be delivered by Pastor Will Williams, our Youth Pastor. Pastor Will is a Senior at La Sierra University, majoring in Ministerial Studies. He is married to Kendal (Hester), and they live in Riverside, California.

THROUGH THE BIBLE IN LESS THAN 10 YEARS — Pastor Gary is on a journey through the greatest piece of literature ever published. Starting with Genesis 1:1, we are weaving our way through the tricky forest of biblical narrative. How long do you think it will take to reach the end of the Book of Revelation?

CHURCH ORGAN CAMPAIGN — We have created a “Matching Fund Campaign” for a new church organ. The church will match, dollar-for-dollar, all donations to the Church Organ Fund. The present church organ has served us well for many years, but we would like to upgrade to a modern organ with all of the capabilities that such an organ can provide. Mark your offering envelopes “Organ Fund”.

OFFERING NEXT WEEK — is for Church Budget.

FOOD COLLECTION — We have placed a container in the foyer to receive donations for the local food banks. Please bring canned goods, bags of rice, beans, etc. to donate to this very worthy cause. NO glass containers!

MIDWEEK FELLOWSHIP — will not meet this week and will resume March 6th.

THE EAST COUNTY WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP GROUP — meets at 10:30 AM each Wednesday morning. For location information please call Georgia Gilliam at (619) 443-5813.

LOCAL MISSION PROJECT — Our Church Board has voted to be a partner with the Paradise Valley Church in their Refugee Assimilation Program. We will be accepting CLEAN clothing and WORKING household items to help these families establish homes here in San Diego. (NO junk please) Donations may be brought to our church library room. Thank you for your help!

COMMUNITY SERVICES — meets each Tuesday morning from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon. If you are interested in sewing baby layettes please join us. We supply Sharp Mary Birch Hospital with these baby layettes, which are given to needy mothers. We need help and yours would be much appreciated!

CHURCH WEBSITE — Did you know that your friends can watch our Worship Hour LIVE each Sabbath at www.tsdachurch.org? Or that Pastor Gary has a weekly message on the homepage? Or that there is a book review on the site? Well, now you know!

PARENTS ROOM IS A QUIET ROOM — Just a reminder that our “Parent’s Room” at the rear of the Sanctuary is for parents with very small children. The Parents Room is intended to be quiet so that babies can sleep. Please do not leave your children in this room. It is not a child-care room. Thank you for your help in this matter!

Pastors Rant

One of my favorite things to do is take a three-day vacation (or retreat) to Yosemite National Park. It’s a chance to get away from the busyness of the world. The experience lifts me spiritually and emotionally.

When I am in Yosemite I am filled with love and awe, and I echo Peter’s words to Jesus: “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here.” Peter, of course, said this while atop the Mount of Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-9). He was moved by the event AND the location.

When I’m in Yosemite National Park I don’t want to leave my place of retreat. But I have learned that I am not meant to stay on the mountaintop. God’s work cannot be done if I stay in retreat.

I am refueled by taking retreats. You might say I am “transfigured” there. Though my clothes are not “dazzling white” on the outside, I am cleansed and renewed on the inside. A retreat helps me remember God’s love and refocus on my calling.

When packing my suitcase to return home, I tuck in some grace to share, some faith to wear, and a lot of love to care. Perhaps YOU have a similar experience from time to time. We all need retreats. We all need to go up the mountain. We all need to be transfigured. Treat yourself to at least one retreat this year. I will do wonders for your spirit.

Book Review

Reclaiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World, by John Shelby Spong. 2011 Harper Collins.

Reclaiming the Bible It is becoming increasingly obvious that the world is less “religious” than it used to be—especially here in the United States. By “religious” I mean the practice of Bible-reading and church-going. Organized religion has taken a big hit over the past 4 decades, and how the Bible has been taught is a primary reason.

John Shelby Spong strives to reintroduce the Bible to a skeptical public with the publication in 2011 of this most interesting book. It is a noble and ambitious attempt. His premise is that the Bible is more than the average preacher claims it to be.

The average seminary graduate learns for 2-4 years all about the fascinating book that is The Holy Bible, then goes into the local church and pretends that it is something else—a stale, fixed canon of dogma. Pastors do this for an understandable reason—they are afraid of their congregation, afraid of bucking tradition, and therefore afraid of telling the truth.

If you would like to know what many pastors are afraid to tell you, I suggest buying Spong’s book and keeping it on your nightstand, for occasional reading. Prior to his retirement in 2000, Spong was the Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey.
