On Thursday, March 22, 2012, the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Executive Committee voted to change the wording on all ministerial credentials within its jurisdiction. Whereas the wording prior to March 22 on each credential stated that the pastor was “ordained-commissioned,” beginning immediately the word “commissioned” is dropped from the document.

This is a monumental step forward in the history of Adventism. And thankfully, it begins in THIS Conference. All pastors, male and female, are now “ordained” ministers in Southeastern. How this will be received around the North American Division remains to be seen.

We have, regrettably, been playing a game in North American Adventism for far too long. We have encouraged women to enter the ministry. We have educated them, paid for their Seminary training, placed them as senior pastors in churches, given them all the rights and privileges of their male counterparts WITH ONE EXCEPTION—we have not “ordained” them.

There are a lot of politics and tradition behind our historic unwillingness to grant women ministers the privilege of being called “ordained.” The politics is due to the fact that we are a “world” church, and as such each world division has an equal vote at General Conference sessions and on the GC Executive Committee. Many divisions outside of North America believe that women should not be pastors. In their cultures that is a traditional male role.

There is also the traditional understanding of the role of women in the Bible, and a few selected statements of Paul that are appealed to as to why God does not want women to be ordained. Yet, the good folks who appeal to Scripture are not reasonable in their exposition of those texts. For example, Paul writes that “women should remain silent in the churches” (1 Cor. 14:34), yet we seem to have no trouble with women teaching Sabbath School classes, sharing a question or remark in an adult Sabbath School, saying a prayer during Worship, and a host of other ways that this mandate by Paul is violated each Sabbath.

And so in our confusion and Biblical naivete, we have, historically, been afraid to ordain women, fearful that we would violate Scripture, and fearful that we might offend a fellow Adventist somewhere else in the world. Some of the finest pastors in Adventism are women. Go to the La Sierra University church and listen to Pastor Chris Oberg, and then try to convince me that she was not called by God to the ministry. Go to Andrews University’s Theological Seminary and sit in a homiletics class taught by Dr. Hyveth Williams, and then try to convince me that she was not called by God to preach and teach up-and-coming pastors about the sanctified dignity of preaching.

Not ordaining women, at this time in North American Adventist history, makes no sense whatever. Women have been called, educated, and trained for years in the magnificent art of pastoring. They have prayed with, baptized, married, and buried members of their church family. Their gifts have been shared EXACTLY as their male counterparts have shared their pastoral gifts. There is no logical reason to NOT ordain them in North America.

And so our Conference leadership has led the way, finally, in correcting what for decades has been a regrettable injustice. It takes courage to blaze a trail, and this is a courageous decision on the part of the SECC Executive Committee. And up to now it has taken courage to be a female pastor in Adventism. I congratulate my female counterparts who have “put up with” the snail’s pace of progress, and who have tolerated the small-minded and inconsistent thinking of those who, stubbornly, refused to give an inch on this issue. I have no doubt that those believers are good people, but I am convinced that they are wrong.

This new step is both right—and righteous. It is both symbolic—and tangible. And it is REMARKABLE. What a time to be alive!

Book Review

Reclaiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World, by John Shelby Spong. 2011 Harper Collins.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the world is less “religious” than it used to be—especially here in the United States. By “religious” I mean the practice of Bible-reading and church-going. Organized religion has taken a big hit over the past 4 decades, and how the Bible has been taught is a primary reason.

John Shelby Spong strives to reintroduce the Bible to a skeptical public with the publication in 2011 of this most interesting book. It is a noble and ambitious attempt. His premise is that the Bible is more than the average preacher claims it to be.

The average seminary graduate learns for 2-4 years all about the fascinating book that is The Holy Bible, then goes into the local church and pretends that it is something else—a stale, fixed canon of dogma. Pastors do this for an understandable reason—they are afraid of their congregation, afraid of bucking tradition, and therefore afraid of telling the truth.

If you would like to know what many pastors are afraid to tell you, I suggest buying Spong’s book and keeping it on your nightstand, for occasional reading. Prior to his retirement in 2000, Spong was the Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey.

PARENTS ROOM IS A QUIET ROOM — Just a reminder that our “Parent’s Room” at the rear of the Sanctuary is for parents with very small children. The Parents Room is intended to be quiet so that babies can sleep. Please do not leave your children in this room. It is not a child-care room. Thank you for your help in this matter!

THROUGH THE BIBLE IN LESS THAN 10 YEARS — Pastor Gary is on a journey through the greatest piece of literature ever published. Starting with Genesis 1:1, we are weaving our way through the tricky forest of biblical narrative. How long do you think it will take to reach the end of the Book of Revelation?

CHURCH ORGAN CAMPAIGN — We have created a “Matching Fund Campaign” for a new church organ. The church will match, dollar-for-dollar, all donations to the Church Organ Fund. The present church organ has served us well for many years, but we would like to upgrade to a modern organ with all of the capabilities that such an organ can provide. Mark your offering envelopes “Organ Fund”.

FOOD COLLECTION — We have placed a container in the foyer to receive donations for the local food banks. Please bring canned goods, bags of rice, beans, etc. to donate to this very worthy cause. NO glass containers!

MIDWEEK FELLOWSHIP — “Should the Lords Supper be a Real Supper?” will be the topic thisTuesday at 6pm in the Board Room.
